We used Illustrator CS4 and learned how to use the basic tools such as the drawing tools, flare tool, blending tools and gradient tool. Are first exercise was to create a flag like logo.

Are second exercise was to use the flare tool to make a kind of effect the sun would make.

The third thing we made using the gradient tool, we used this to get different effects such as using linear and radial gradients to get different effects.

EVO

EVO

During late Febuary, our Creative Digital Media class were to design Book Covers and make a CV and present them in front of the class. The theme of the book cover was “about yourself”.

For my book cover I created a cover consisting of a Mitsubishi Evo 8 as the main focus because I have a big interest in cars. On the bottom left it has a piece of text saying “ITB” as ITB is apart of my life now. On the bottom right it has the XBOX 360 logo and controller, as I am interested in this also.

On the side of the car there is a picture of a game of hurling being played, I faded it into the car as it is another main focus as I love playing the sport for my team “Kilmessan”. Our team recently got to the Intermediate – All Ireland Final where we lost to Cappletaggle from Galway.

Also you will see a Budweiser logo on the Windscreen of the car, it is here because I love my nights out, not too many of them as much “RESESSION”.

Also you can see the “Tiesto” logo on the bumper of the car, which I am very into trance, dance and electronica music.

Edward Melvin (Guest Speaker)

ican

O n the 11th of Febuary 2008, our Creative Digital Media class had a Guest speaker from the Digital Media industry. The company he works in is called ICAN.

He is the project manager of the company for eight years. His philosophy is that he doesn’t think about the future, he takes it one day at a time, which I will take on board.

He came to talk about the roles of the people who work with the company. Including the project manager, creative team, production team, accounting, media, search marketing and client services. He also showed us some of the work their company had done in the past. Some of these projects include  “Star in a WRC video”, this was a project done for the WRC rally when it came to Ireland. It was basically a flash application that showed you in a rally car.

Also they did some other pretty cool stuff.

I have learned a few key things for our guest speaker

  1. What it is like to work in the creative digital media industry.
  2. What pressures face the teams when working under timelines.
  3. What the work place looks like eg 2 monitors…
  4. That there will be a job out there for people when they graduate.

Day Out In Bodies Exibition, The Hugh Lane and The Science Gallery

On the Wednesday 18th of Febuary our creative digital media class went on a trip to Bodies exibition in the Ambassodor, after this we went to the Hugh Lane gallery were we admired the abstract art of Francis Bacon’s Studio, then we went for a bite to eat in McDonalds. Then we headed over to the Science Gallery  in Trinity.

The Bodies Exibition

We visited the bodies exibition were we seen all of the human anatomy from young to old and inside to the outside of the human body. We seen a real embyro, real human parts such as feet, hands, brains, lungs, heart, stomach and much more… There was also a smoking room. This room had human parts of a smoker and it showed how smoking effects your internal organs.

The Hugh Lane Gallery – Francis Bacon’s Studio

We then visited the Hugh Lane Gallery were we admired the abstract art from Francis Bacon’s Studio. We seen paintings, canvas paintings and sculpture. We then browsed around the gift shop were we all bought something to remember the day. I bought a bookmarker and a few post cards.

The Science Gallery

After the Hugh Lane gallery we got a snack at McDonald’s and then meet back at the Science Gallery in Trinity. We seen some crazy inventions at the event. We seen the Universe, it was a huge cube with different sized holes which acted like the universe. We also seen the orb, this was a disc shaped object and spinned around very fast and showed a hollowgram of the planet earth.

Intro:

The website i have chosen is Yahoo.
I’m going to talk about Yahoo.co.uk. I use it as a search engine,  look up movie trailers, search images and mostly I use it for my webmail.

The web address is www.yahoo.co.uk

Simplicity:

I  think the yahoo interface is simple. On the home page it has all of the main links that you need, such as the search bar,  it is easy then to search for video, images or articles on the web by just clicking the links above it.

It also has a very simple mail service, its easy to register and the mail interface is quite easy to.   It  also has an “ask a question” service which again is easy to use, you just type your question, then wait until another yahooer writes an answer for you.

It is also easy to get the news you want, if you want the sports, news or entertainment headlines, its all there on the home page in a tabular format which makes it easy to use.

Colour:

The colour on the yahoo site is quite simple. They use a soft colours and fade it in to a near white colour, this gives a calm and neutral effect which attracts users. All links on the page are a navy blue, thats how you know there is a link. They use a white background to emphsize the information on the page. They have put the search button an orange-yellow colour, they did this beacause it is the most pressed button on the site, this use of colour makes it obvious that this is the button to press to search. It has cold feeling to it, as all the links are blue.

 Conventions:

The yahoo site is very easy to interpret, the most used feature is at the top of the page, the search bar.  The navigation of the site is very easy, most of there services are located on the home page, in a list of links along the left hand of the page, the links are bold, which makes them obvious and look clean and crisp. It is quite easy to distinguish which text is a link, first of all, most of the links are navy blue colour, and when rollover the link the text becomes underlined.

Yahoo have variety of services, and when you click into them, it always tells you where you are, eg. If i clicked into the finance link on the left, it comes up “yahoo finance”.  The navigation for the mail, messenger, weather, music, local and movies tabs are quite a good navigational feature. When you register and log on, when you roll your mouse over the tabs a menu folds down displaying information which is a great way saving space. Eg. When i scroll over the mail tab, it will tell me if I have any new messages.

 Typography:

The main font family that yahoo uses is the Arial font. This is a good way of balacing the webpage, all the fonton the page is the same so it looks more professional.

The yahoo site has got a few variations on the text size and weighting. All the important links are heavier than the other text. Around 80% of the text on the page are links. They don’t have big paragraphs of text, they have smaller one line phrases where you and click the link and the article will then be displayed, this makes it easy on the eyes which makes it more attractive.

 Layout:

The basic structure of the yahoo page is done in three main coloums, a left navigation where all there links are for there different services, then the main content coloum in the center of the page, this cosists of news, sport and entertaiment news. On the right hand side there is another coloum, this is for the mail and messenger services, then under this again they ussally have reviews or popular searches on yahoo.

Above these three coloums is  header, this is at the top for a reason beacuse most people use yahoo as a search engine, so the search bar will be located at the top.

Then at the bottom they have a footer, this has all the copyright, terms and conditions, help, and info on the site.
